16th October – Brown + 18 left Maryland to Harper’s Ferry Aim to retrieve weapons, arm enslaved people, retreat to Appalachians and spark a slave revolt Brown could not inform slaves in advance The raid managed to be kept a secret Captures the arsenal with remarkable ease Few slaves got involved and hostages were taken Goes wrong….
