Aim to retrieve weapons, arm enslaved people, retreat to Appalachians and spark a slave revolt
Brown could not inform slaves in advance
The raid managed to be kept a secret
Captures the arsenal with remarkable ease
Few slaves got involved and hostages were taken
Goes wrong….
Train pulls in – shots fired by Brown’s men and a black baggage master dies
Brown takes refuge in the fire engine house
Brown was wounded and 6 of his men taken
10 of his ‘army’ were killed (2x sons) and several others also died
Brown was tried for treason
Refuses to plead of insanity – die a martyr and help the slavery cause – execute 2nd December 1859
