1 Rad T 110 Time, Distance, Shielding
The three basic components of reducing radiation exposure

2 Time Radiation exposure is dependent on the length of the exposure.
Obviously, if you are exposed for 1 minute you will receive a lower dose than if you are exposed for 5 minutes. The assumption here is that the dose rate remains constant

3 For radiologic technologists you should only be exposed during fluoroscopy exams.
Unfortunately, you will have little control during these of the exposure time. Consequently, you will need to distance and shielding to minimize your exposure.

4 Distance As the diagram demonstrates x-rays diverge from their source. Therefore, the farther away you are from the source the less your exposure will be

5 As the distance doubles, the exposure decreases by a factor of 4.
Mathematically, the inverse square law is how we express the divergent beam. As the distance doubles, the exposure decreases by a factor of 4. I1 I2 D22 D12 = ---

6 Shielding What can be shielded You The patient The room The equipment
Usually only during fluoroscopy The patient When appropriate The room Tested by a physicist. Primary and secondary The equipment Against leakage
