1 Imagery Let’s review…

2 What is IMAGERY again? It is the writer’s use of words to develop an idea The words being used connect to reader’s 5 senses Then words create these images/experiences in your head without really experiencing them

3 Here are the 5 types of IMAGERY:
Visual (sight) Auditory (hear) Olfactory (smell) Tactile (touch) Gustatory (taste) “And the yellow, half-moon large and low…” (Browning, “Meeting at Night”) “Overlaying all this, a soundtrack: choo-k-choo-k-choo-k-choo-k—the metronomic rhythm of an Amtrak train rolling down the line to California…” (Andy Isaacson, “Riding the Rails.” The New York Times, March 8, 2009) “After her hike, Kelsey slowly took her shoes off and the air around me began to wreak of a mixture of sweat and vinegar.” “Phil felt the softness of the linens meet his toes. This feeling crept up to his legs, then his back, then his arms and hands. He then felt the coolness of his Tempur-Pedic pillow hit his face as he slipped into bed and let go of everything.” “As the wave overtook Dexter, he took multiple gulps of the salty, bitter sea water causing him to cough and gag as he went up for air.”
