1 WWTP Operation and Infrastructure; Issues and Solutions
Welcome Back Introduce self Moderator and presenter for afternoon Member of the HC WW PC Day Job - AECOM Morning Session Topics – identified changes that are occurring in our WW community Most notably: the new bacteria regulations As Engineers, operators, and Owners: prepare for these new regulations Many WWTP: no problem Some plants will struggle It is these struggling WWTP that we’ll take a closer look at this afternoon Harris County Wastewater Symposium Wastewater Treatment Plants & Bacteria: Strategies for Compliance David Munn, PE April 26, 2011

2 WWTP Operation and Infrastructure; Issues and Solutions
Purpose: Identify issues that may hamper WWTP performance Suggest operational and infrastructure improvements that may improve WWTP performance Provide “tools” for your tool box Focus on bacteria reduction in WWTP effluent All of the presentations that you’ll see share a common purpose

3 Afternoon Presentation Panel
Harris County Wastewater Policy Committee Members: Teague Harris, PE – Pate Engineers, AWBD Representative Ray Young, PE – Water Engineers Inc., Small WWTP Design Representative David Munn, PE – AECOM, HCEC Representative Expert Speakers Tim Brodeur, PE – AECOM Laura Bonjonia & Tanny Busby - Envirodyne Laboratories Assembled a panel of very knowledgeable speakers with a range of expertise Three speakers: HCWWPC Teague Ray – Specialized area of expertise, small WWTP design, Appropriate given that the majority of WWTP’s in this region are smaller than 1.0 MGD Tim – Florida: already seeing more stringent standards Panel available for questions at the end of the afternoon. Ask that you hold questions until that time.

4 WWTP Operation and Infrastructure; Issues and Solutions
Introduction to Afternoon Agenda: Collection Systems and Lift Stations Biological Processes and Solids Handling Chlorination Chemistry Chlorine Contact Basins UV Systems Best Practices for Effluent Sampling Start at front of the plant; move through entire plant When most of us think about bacteria reduction, we typically think about the disinfection process Understand: things that occur throughout the entire plant that affect bacteria levels and improvements that can be made throughout the plant that can help WWTPs meet those level. Many operators are taking their own samples; Plant operating fine, sudden spike in bacteria levels, no correlation to any other change in process May be the result of poor sampling procedures; experts from the lab give some background on best sampling practices

5 Harris County Wastewater Policy Committee Workshop Participants
A & S - E N G I N E E R S, - I N C. Ideas and concepts were not developed by this group of speakers Held a workshop in Aguirre & Fields Sander Engineering Corp.
