K-9 First year of implementing the new, redesigned curriculum /17 10 All BC schools will be implementing the new curriculum in 2018/2019 11-12 All BC schools will be implementing the new curriculum in 2019/2020

8 Why? BC’s curriculum is being modernized to respond to a changing world Curriculum must be student-centred and flexible, and maintain focus on literacy and numeracy Deep understanding and application of knowledge is at the centre of the new model

12 What’s Changing? English Language Arts Gr. 10 (2018-19):
All students must take ‘Focused Literary Studies 10’ (2 credits) All students must choose ONE of the following 2-credit courses: New Media Studies 10 (This course will meet the needs of most students) Creative Writing 10 (Recommended for Advanced Placement (AP) focused students who have high academic standing, good work habits and the recommendation of their teacher) Composition 10 (Recommended for students who require support for foundational English skills)

Retirement of 2 career courses – Planning 10 and Graduation Transitions Planning 10 will be retired as of June 30, 2018 Grad Transitions will be retired as of June 30, 2019

The following career education courses will be used in all BC schools in 2018/19: Career Life Education Graduation Transitions The following career education courses will be used in all BC schools in 2019/20: Career Life Connections + Capstone

15 Career Planning Current Grades 10 and 11 students will be able to meet the graduation requirement with any of the following combinations: Planning 10/Grad Transitions Planning 10/Career Life Connections + Capstone Career Life Education/Grad Transitions Career Life Education/Career Life Connections + Capstone

Global Partnerships (Grades 10-12) Grade 11 Engineering Cohort Social Justice 12

17 Course Selection Gr. 8-10s – Presentations by counsellors on January 18th during Collaboration Block Students given sheets with requirements and options outlined Parent presentations January 18th Courses should be selected by February 2nd

18 Exams for Grade 10s & 11s Students in Grade 10 this year will write the Numeracy and Literacy Assessments before graduation (Literacy Assessment introduced in 2019/20) Students currently in Grade 11 will write the Numeracy Exam on June 26th and write the associated provincial exam for Language Arts 12

19 Exams for Grade 12s Students currently in Grade 12 will:
Finish all 2004 Graduation Program requirements Have completed a Math 10, a Language Arts 10, a Science 10 and have written associated provincial exams Take a Language Arts 12 course and write the associated provincial exam NOT write the new Numeracy or Literacy Assessments
