Ch. 11 The Mathematics of Chemical Equations
11-1: Stoichiometry
2
Stoichiometry The study of quantitative (measurable) relationship that exists in chemical formulas and chemical reactants Numerically relates reactants and products
3
Example Stoichiometry Problem
You know that you can produce water by burning hydrogen gas. What is the equation? H2 + O2 H2O If you wanted to produce 15 grams of water this way, how much hydrogen gas would you need?
4
In a balanced chemical equation…
The coefficients represents moles of substances. They can also represent numbers of particles. They DO NOT represent grams. The mole must be used for this.
5
Back to the equation H2 + O2 H2O
2 moles of H2 react with one mole of O2 to produce 2 moles of H2O To convert from moles of one chemical to another, use the coefficients from the balanced chemical equation. SP1, pg. 352 PP1 PP2
