1 Update on US Activities
US in GEO-VENER Update on US Activities Dr. Richard Eckman Applied Sciences Program & Atmospheric Composition Modeling & Analysis Program NASA Headquarters October 24, 2017 ● Washington, DC

2 NASA Applied Sciences Program: Lines of Business
Discovering and demonstrating innovative and practical uses of Earth observations in organizations’ policy, business, and management decisions. Applications Prove-out, develop, and transition applications ideas for sustained uses of Earth obs. in decision making. Capacity Building Build skills and capabilities in US and developing countries to access Earth observations to benefit society. Mission Planning Identify applications early in mission lifecycle and integrate end-user needs in mission design and development. |‌ 2

4 New NASA Applied Sciences Projects
The purpose of this solicitation was to select projects to advance specific elements of the GEO Work Programme NASA requested proposals for applying Earth observations to address renewable energy decision support needs, such as increased productivity and optimized investment decisions; all renewable energy types were appropriate. 11/19/2018

5 New Applied Sciences Projects (2)
MAD-WRF: A solar irradiance nowcasting system to support the GEOVENER element (Pedro Jimenez Munoz, NCAR) Blend a satellite-based initialization system (MADCast) with a NWP-based nowcasting approach (WRF-Solar) to create an improved end-to-end solar irradiance forecast system, called MAD- WRF, for improved short-range solar forecasts. 11/19/2018

6 New Applied Sciences Projects (3)
Capacity Building for the Utilization of Earth Observations among Utility Providers to Increase Energy Resilience and Renewable Energy Uptake in Support of the GEO Vision for Energy (Natasha Sadoff, Battelle) Engage the Earth science community, utility end users, and other government or research stakeholders in strengthening the ability of utility end users to access and use EO data. The proposed approach utilizes a capacity building framework to conduct a thorough needs assessment, utilizing the Partnership for Energy Sector Climate Resilience as a key entry point to engaging with the end user community. 11/19/2018

7 Other Initiatives American Meteorological Society (AMS) Renewable Energy Committee Forum to promote discussion and action between industry, academia, and government. It is intended to promote intelligent integration of weather, climate, and atmospheric science. The main topics of interest are the siting, performance, and reliability of renewable energy sources. Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP) Energy & Climate Working Group Facilitate interactions and build better connections, both technical and interpersonal, among policy and decision makers, climate change and energy data providers, decision support tool providers, and end users. 11/19/2018
