March 6th, 2012 Summer Olympics Reading Comprehension Strategies

Use the reading strategy of connecting to prior knowledge to understand new information in a non-fiction text. Classify information Recognize plural nouns formed by adding –s and –es Understand and identify number words Pennsylvania State Standard: 1.1.3.D.—Demonstrate comprehension/understanding before reading, during reading, and after reading on grade level texts through strategies such as retelling, summarizing, note taking, connecting to prior knowledge, supporting assertions about text with evidence from text, and non-linguistic representations.

Practice following along and highlighting important information. Look at the questions BEFORE reading the passage Use your highlighter to locate important information and the answers.

28 Breakout Rooms You will be placed into 3 separate groups. Each group will be answering a different set of questions. Please take your time to answer the questions and choose the best answer based on the story that we read together. Please remember to look at the .pdf file of the story if you have any trouble remembering the answer. Put students into groups and have each group answer one set of the following three sets of questions. Regroup and review the answers.

Brief Overview: Students made predictions about the story and then practiced reading the story out loud. Students also had a copy of the story in a .pdf file and were instructed to print it out or use it for referring to the questions at the end of the story. Students were given assessment questions at the end of the passage. Students answered questions and reviewed the answers, they also answered an opinion question and backed up their responses with a reason.
