Josef Stalin
Communist dictator of the USSR; took complete control after Lenin’s death; controlled people with fear and violence
Napoleon – quickly took over Animal Farm as the sole leader; ruled the animals with fear and violence
Leon Trotsky
Third leader of the Soviet Union (with Lenin and Stalin); true believer in Marxism and Communism; worked very hard to make it happen but was not as powerful as Stalin and was eventually exiled and murdered by Stalin
Snowball – true believer in Old Major’s dream and in Animalism; wanted to make positive changes and did what was best for the animals; was chased off by Napoleon
White Russians
Supporters of the tsar; did not want Russia to change; did not support Stalin or Communism; most left Russia because they feared they’d be killed by Stalin
Mollie – joined in the rebellion, but did not like the change; wanted to be treated to ribbons and sugar by the humans; ran away from Animal Farm
Politiburo
Means “political bureau” - a group of men led and chosen by Stalin to make decisions for the country
Committee of Pigs – a group of pigs chosen by Napoleon who will now oversee all decisions on the farm
KGB
Josef Stalin’s secret spies and secret police; carried out murders of anyone who threatened or went against Stalin
The Dogs – carried out Napoleon’s violent biddings

Satire is a work (book, article, TV show, movie, etc.) that ridicules its subject in order to make a comment or criticism about it
To ridicule is to make fun of or to criticize something.

8. Satire in Political Cartoons!
I’ve hidden six different political cartoons around the room. Your job is to find them and analyze each of them using your chart.
Each cartoon includes two parts:
1. Describe the cartoon. What do you see?
2. What is the artist mocking? How do you know?

Next, you’re going to write your own political cartoon about Animal Farm!
Go back through Animal Farm (chapter five especially!). Write down a sentence or short passage that illustrates satire, or something Orwell was mocking about politics, human nature, and/or society in general.
Afterwards, you should create your own satirical cartoon about the same topic. Like George Orwell, use at least one animal to illustrate the symbolism of your message.
