4 Online Testing Introduction

5 Testing Overview

6 Computer-Based Testing Components
TestNav 8: Pearson’s secure testing platform Windows and Mac workstations have a dependency on Java to provide online tests to students. iPads and Chromebooks will require installing the TestNav application to provide the computer-based tests. When a student logs into TestNav it operates in a “kiosk” mode to take over the entire screen of the student workstation and prevents access to other applications. Proctor Caching Pearson supplied software that allows districts or schools to download an encrypted local copy of the tests to deliver to students to avoid potential bandwidth issues. The Proctor Caching software for TestNav 8 will be available in December 2013. The minimum requirements for running Proctor Caching and TestNav 8 can be found at: System Check tool An online, Pearson supplied tool used by districts to evaluate their site readiness for online testing. There is a version of the System Check for each version of TestNav.

7 Computer-Based Testing
Components PearsonAccess A web portal used by school personnel to manage the testing process PARCC will use a separate instance of PearsonAccess and will require a separate login ID PearsonAccess allows users to: Manage user accounts Upload and manage students Create test sessions Monitor students testing Access reporting Create and manage configurations for TestNav ePats Web-based practice testing environments that include sample items Provide students with the opportunity to encounter the testing application and the item types before the operational assessments

8 Infrastructure Trial An Infrastructure Trial is a “dress rehearsal” of a computer-based assessment. It does not use real student information. An Infrastructure Trial is a low stakes dry run before the operational tests begin. Everyone within the district and the school who will have a role in the computer-based assessments should be included in the Infrastructure Trial. The Infrastructure Trial is conducted using the Training Center. The Training Center offers the ability to create “dummy” students in bulk to reduce preparation time for the Infrastructure Trial. Plan to conduct an Infrastructure Trial only after you have confirmed site and staff readiness. Reviewing set up and communications prior to testing in an Infrastructure Trial can avoid possible problems and delays during the live assessment. The Infrastructure Trial is complete when you can confirm that you are ready for the computer-based assessment. You may use the trial as needed to confirm readiness.

9 Site Readiness - High Level Checklist
Receive PearsonAccess account information from DAC. DTC identify School Technology Coordinators and create PearsonAccess acounts. STC view Site Readiness Technical Training. Configure Firewall/Content filter. Identify testing labs and Proctor Caching machines. Install Proctor Caching (Software Download PC & Mac). Complete System Check verification on workstations and wireless testing labs. Update workstations to comply with TestNav hardware/software requirements. Verify Assessment Environments in the PearsonAccess Training Center (Infrastructure Trial). Enter TestNav Configuration(s) in PearsonAccess Production

10 Site readiness preparation takes 30 - 60 minutes per site.
During our lessons learned follows up with our district technology coordinators we learned that in most cases site readiness took between 30minutes to an hour to prepare each testing environment.

12 Additional Information
Schools testing with XP devices must install HTML 5 compliant browser (i.e., Firefox or Chrome). Set up requirements for Chromebooks & iPads. External Keyboards are Required for iPads. Considerations for testing with wireless devices. BYOD & Non-Qualified Virtual Computing Solutions security considerations. Java Updates. Critical Patch Updates Critical Patch Updates are collections of security fixes for Oracle products. Starting with the October 2013 Critical Patch Update, security fixes for Java SE are released under the normal Critical Patch Update schedule. 18 Assessment Coordinator and technology Coordinator need to collaborate!
Many other states that have transitioned successfully to online assessment site planning and collaboration as a key component to success. Many site reported that assessment coordinators relied on the technical expertise of the tech specialists in creating test sessions, monitoring online test sessions, and even creating user accounts using Pearson’s online administrative tool. Assessment coordinators have a high level of knowledge surrounding administering a fair, valid, reliable, and standardized assessment. They understand the importance of material and data security. They need to keep their tech specialist collogues informed and aware of the rules and regulations involved with summative assessment. It is important that these two groups share their expertise in order to have a successful online assessment administration.

19 Charter School Support
11/18/2018 Charter School Support Support runs through Districts. Point them to CDE resources. Encourage Charters to participate in infrastructure trials. Pearson Help Desk. CDE Partner with DTC: DTC invite them to DTC regional meetings. DTC organize site visit and invite charter reps. Approximately 195 Charters that need to complete CMAS 192 Districts

20 Please Contact CDE if you have…
Low Bandwidth Concerns. Using a Non-Qualified Virtual Computing Solution. Planning to use BYOD devices for CMAS. Using devices meeting minimum PARCC specs running Linux Ubuntu 9-10 or Fedora 6 for assessment.
