“HARLEM” By Langston Hughes What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a raisin in the sun? Or fester like a sore-- And then run? Does it stink like rotten meat? Or crust and sugar over-- like a syrupy sweet? Maybe it just sags like a heavy load. Or does it explode?

2 Poem Meaning About the black experience of the American Dream.
One of the most powerful images in black literature. Normally a grape is left in the sun to become a raisin. In the poem, a raisin is left in the sun. Metaphor echoes slavery of people who have been “dried out” but are given no rest.
