1. What strategy was used by Themistocles in order to defeat the Persians during the Second Persian War?
2. How did the defeat of the Persians allow the Golden Age of Greek Civilization to begin?
3. Describe the differences between Athens and Sparta? Were the two city- states similar in any way?
4. How did the Delian League signify the beginning of a conflict between Athens and Sparta following the end of the Persian Wars?

Several city-states formed an alliance against Athens
Led by Sparta
Threatened by Athens’ economic and political power and influence
Sparta was afraid and jealous of Athens

The Peloponnesian War

4. Peloponnesian War [431 BCE - 404 BCE]
Peloponnesian War = fought between Athens (and its allies) and Sparta (and its allies)
Sparta allied itself with Persia -- made a deal for their help

5. The Conflict [431 BCE - 404 BCE]
Plague hit Athens -- killed 1/3 of its people (including General Pericles)
After Pericles died, some Athenians wanted to surrender and others wanted to keep fighting
No decision made -- fighting continued for many years

Several city-states switched sides and joined Sparta
Spartans then destroyed Athenian navy
Athens surrendered in 404 BCE

7. Effects of the War War brought disaster to Greek city-states:
1) Fields destroyed
2) Unemployment high
3) Populations declined
4) Many men left and became mercenaries (hired soldiers) in Persian Army

9. Five Themes Activity
I am going to assign you either Persia, Athens, or Sparta –
Your assignment is to create a movie poster for a fictional movie that you and your partner will be directing.
Your movie poster MUST address all five themes for the empire or city – state that you have been assigned (you can do this either in the title, slogan, pictures, etc.)
Requirements: Title (20 pts) Slogan (20 pts) At least three pictures (20 pts) Starring Actors (10 pts) Addresses all Five themes for your empire or city state (30 pts)
