Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center

2 What is Juvenile Intake (JIAC)?
JIAC programs operate in all 31 judicial districts throughout the State of Kansas, providing intake evaluations for alleged juvenile offenders (JO) and children in need of care (CINC) who are taken into custody by law enforcement agencies. JIAC operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to assist law enforcement by allowing them to return to duty quickly while we assess the youth’s needs and determine what services may be beneficial.

3 JIAC’s Principle Objectives
To provide a central location for law enforcement to take youth in custody (CINC/JO), thereby allowing the officer to return to their patrol assignment Enter data into the Department of Corrections operated database To collect information and assess the youth by administering a screening tool to determine the needs of each individual child Refer the youth and their family to resources

4 Misconceptions of JIAC
JIAC has the authority to hold kids for an extended period of time or overnight JIAC has the ability to screen juveniles for inpatient mental health treatment JIAC receives all reports on any child that has Law Enforcement contact JIAC is a form of punishment JIAC is a facility where youth will be intimidated to influence an improvement in behavior
