1 "Scars to Your Beautiful" – Alessia Cara
Syeda Ara 12/2/17 Speech; 2nd Hour

2 Introduction Alessia Cara is a Canadian singer and songwriter
She was born on July 11, 1996 (21 years old) She usually sings pop, R&B, and alternative R&B In "Scars to Your Beautiful", she promotes a message of self-acceptance that challenges the beauty standards we see everyday Was inspired for this song by her struggles with hair loss; daughter of a hairdresser

3 Theme The theme of this song is beauty of simplicity, empowerment, and self-awareness.

4 Verse One She just wants to be beautiful
She goes unnoticed, she prays no limits She craves attention, she praises an image She prays to be sculpted by the sculptor Oh, she don’t see the light that’s shining  Deeper than the eyes can find it  Maybe we have made her blind So she tries to cover up her pain and cut her woes away Cause Covergirls don't cry after their face is made

5 Verse One Explanation In verse one, Alessia talks about the struggles people go through to be considered beautiful since beauty standards nowadays is maintaining the latest trends and styles we've been present to. She says how we all have been blinded to perceive beauty as this image instead of seeing the light and beauty within ourselves and accepting that.

6 Chorus But there's a hope that’s waiting for you in the dark
You should know you're beautiful just the way you are  And you don’t have to change a thing the world can change its heart No scars to your beautiful, we're stars and we're beautiful

7 Chorus Explanation In the chorus, Alessia sends out a message of self-acceptance to love yourself regardless of what society might perceive as a "flaw". You don’t have to change your looks to meet the "requirements" of beauty and that even if you do have scars (in and out) you shouldn't be ashamed because they are the ones to make us unique and shape us to who we are.

8 Verse Two She has dreams to be an envy, so she's starving
You know, Covergirls eat nothing  She says "beauty is pain and there's beauty in everything" "What's a little bit of hunger? I could go a little while longer," she fades away She don't see her perfect, she doesn't understand she's worth it Or that beauty goes deeper than the surface, oh, oh So to all the girls that’s hurting, let me be your mirror  Help you see a little bit clearer the light that shines within

9 Verse Two Explanation In verse two, Alessia discusses how you don't have to starve yourself in order to be perceived as beautiful. She says that your beauty isn't just based off of your looks, but within who you are as a person. So you shouldn't change yourself for anyone, but instead embrace yourself.

10 Conclusion In conclusion, in this presentation I have discussed the meaning of the lyrics in "Scars To Your Beautiful" and the depth of those lyrics are why I think this song is very empowering, especially to those who don’t feel as if their look are enough that they have to reach extra limits just to feel comfortable in their own body.
