5 WCTC MISSION The mission of the Kenneth N Edwards Western Coatings Technology Center (WCTC) is to provide a forum for faculty, students, and industry partners to elevate and bolster educational opportunities and applied research in polymers and coatings technology.  The WCTC will accomplish this mission by: Engaging faculty in teaching and research in polymers and coatings technology; Engaging students in studying and applying skills associated with polymers and coatings technology; and Engaging and developing relationships with members of industry involved in polymers and coatings technology. The WCTC at Cal Poly will be self-supporting. Academic freedom will be practiced in all Center activities. 11/18/2018

6 WCTC Activities Provides research space & equipment to
sponsored projects projects funded through Scholarships, Endowments and CBF Course research projects Provides facilities for polymers and coating laboratory courses CHEM 447/547, 448/548, 451/551 Provides testing services to industry Offers intensive short courses for industry Facilitate industrial internships for students Facilitates industry-university interactions Raise funds through donations [WCTC Expansion Campaign] 11/18/2018

7 WCTC – Short Course Attendance (Last 5 years)
International - 22

8 WCTC Funding $200,000 raised for equipment (Early 1990’s)
$1 million Endowment to support Arthur C. Edwards Endowed Chair in Polymers and Coatings Technology (2001) $350,000 Bill Moore Research Fellowship Endowment to support student research fellowships (2001) $3 million raised for labs, equipment, materials, and facilities to house WCTC in the Warren J. Baker Center for Science and Mathematics (2010) Other funding from contracts, grants and participating industry partners, short courses, and testing services for which there is a long history of success. 11/18/2018

9 A unique, time-sensitive opportunity for expansion of WCTC
A new building project presents the option to relocate EBI Construction of EBI space will cost over $3MM WCTC can expand to CAB space by raising, $1MM from industry $1MM from internal Cal Poly sources 11/18/2018

10 Expectations for Growth as an established center
Additional capacity to do contract research Increasing opportunities for students to do applied research and gain employment in polymers and coatings Additional capacity to provide coatings testing services Ability to accommodate post-graduate employees Increasing “short courses” offerings (2 week industry certificate courses) in summer and throughout the academic year; and 11/18/2018
