Once the current situation is clear, the existing competencies and skills can be mapped to what’s needed in the future. Will you be able to achieve your strategic objectives with your existing talent and their skills? What goals need to be established to acquire new talent or develop existing? The gap analysis process is a detailed comparison of the skills/competency ability of those currently in position and those that will be needed to achieve the organizational abilities going forward.

2. Step 5: Gap Analysis Completing the Gap Analysis
Building on the earlier steps of process, identify what skills and competencies are necessary to achieve future goals.
Based on Talent Review who within the organization, has some level of mastery of the skill or competency. --what is the level of mastery, i.e. expert, proficient or knowledgeable
Is it realistic to develop the existing skills to the next level? --is there someone willing --is there someone capable? --is there sufficient time to develop the ability --can you rotate someone into the role
Is there a need for an external resource?
Based on assessment of above, what are the specific goals and next steps
