What is a pyramid? A pyramid is a large structure made to hold the tombs of ancient Egyptian Pharaohs and Nobles. It has served as an Egyptian culture and tourist attraction for many years. Let’s continue…

What does an Egyptian pyramid look like?
Imbotep built a step pyramid so he could “climb” to heaven. This is a photograph of the Great Pyramid at Giza

How are pyramids built? There are over 100 men every year cutting and moving sand and clay. The men were kept busy, and it was hard work. 100 farmers and slaves may not have been enough, but in an Egyptian area, there were few people who had such skills.

The Great Pyramid The Great pyramid at Giza was Khufu’s pyramid. The pyramid was 480 feet tall and covered 13 acres. The slaves and farmers had to carry 12 million blocks each weighing 5,000 pounds!

“Cool” Facts 1.The Egyptian word for pyramid is Mer meaning place of ascension. 2.A quamy is where the blocks are cut underground. 3.Pyramid cutters’ tools for cutting stones were wooden mallets, softheaded hammers, and chisels. 4.Egyptians built more than 80 pyramids during the old kingdom.
