Write Objective in notebook
Squares + Square Roots Grab a foldable and hmwk sheet GOFORMATIVE & Write Objective in notebook CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.EE.A.2 I can evaluate the square root of a perfect square and the cube root of a perfect cube CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.8.NS.A.2 I can use estimate values to compare two or more irrational numbers.
3
Use cheez-its to make perfect squares
4
Cheez-it Activity *Each team will be given a cup of crackers
(don’t eat these) *Make as many different size squares as you can and record on the graph paper. 1 cheez-it makes a square 2 cheez-it DOES NOT make a square
5
Transfer your findings to the graphic organizer.
# of squares is the number of cheez-its in your square The root is the number of squares on one side.
6
Draw an example of a perfect square number
Define “square root” In your own words Draw the radical sign Draw an example of a perfect square number
7
Graph the square roots on the number line:
8
Can you find the mistake?
Completed Copy of Graphic Organizer Can you find the mistake? Cool Points if you can! 6 squared = 36
9
Let’s Practice Perfect Squares
10
Use cheez-its to make perfect squares But what if we CUT
squares? Could we cut the pieces to make 2 cheez-its a square?
11
Which approximation comes closest?
Possible tries: thirds fourths tenths Which approximation comes closest?
13
VOCAB 7 is the square root of 49 7 squared is 49 3 squared is 9
The square root of 9 is 3 3 2 is 9 Squaring and square roots are opposite operations-just like addition and subtraction
14
Square Roots have 2 solutions...Whaaaaattt?
Square numbers have two of the SAME factors. The square root of 36 could be 6 or -6. 6 x 6= 36 -6 x -6 = 36
15
If there is no sign in front of the radical, list the positive root.
16
If there is a +/- sign in front of the radical, list BOTH square roots.
17
If there is a - sign in front of the radical, list the negative square root.
18
Fractions: If there is a fraction under the radical, take the square root of the numerator AND the denominator
19
What number can you square and get -16?
Negative under the Square Root-NO SOLUTION
