Overpopulation AP Human geography Population and migration unit

2 Which one is overpopulated?

3 What is Overpopulation?
Overpopulation occurs when the number of people exceeds the capacity of the environment to support life at a decent standard of living – that is, the population exceeds the carrying capacity. In other words, overpopulation is when there are too many people and not enough resources.

4 Growing, Growing, Growing?

5 Check for Understanding:
Geographers might characterize as overpopulated a country where A) there are too many people according to a standard economic measure of poverty. B) the population numbers less than one million, but there is concern that the country's natural resources are adequate for only half that number. C) the population numbers more than 100 million and there is concern about the finite limits of natural resources, although the resources available in the country seem adequate to that population. D) the population numbers more than one million, and there is an average distribution of population to resources. E) All of these answer choices are correct.

FIGURE 2-27 POPULATION AND FOOD PRODUCTION IN INDIA Production of wheat and rice has increased more rapidly than has population.

10 Food for Thought: In “The Population Explosion,” Paul and Anne Ehrlich argue that a baby born in a DEVELOPED country poses a greater threat to sustainability than a baby born in a DEVELOPING country because people in developed countries place much higher demands on the world’s supply of energy, food, and other limited resources. What do you think? HOMEWORK: Malthus vs. Boserup Twitter Battle
