1 CAPE INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY
Unit 1: Module 1 Objectives 4 & 5: - distinguish among data, information and knowledge; - explain information processing;

2 What is the relationship between Data, Information and Knowledge
Structure Information Application Knowledge

3 Information Processing
Set of activities done in a particular sequence to bring about a desired outcome Processes include Input –getting data Output –information going out Structure/Processing Activity Data Information

4 Manual Information System
Humans perform all activities of the processing activities. E.g. Finding a friends number in your directory Library cards written up to loan a book

5 Information Processing –A Manual Information System
Activities Collecting gathering all necessary data items Collating organize in a particular sequence. Analysing examine critically, find keys facts, causes, etc. Finding trends, etc Presenting how information is presented; its format, etc. E.g. Text, audio, etc. Disseminating Sharing, spreading, promulgating, broadcasting of information Internet, data communication, radio, television

6 A Manual Information System -Activity
Suppose you are visiting the island where your friend, Barak Obama, lives with his wife and children and you wish to surprise him with a visit to his home. A personal computer Telephone operator You

7 Manual vs. AIS Transmission Manual AIS Collecting Input Collating
Processing Analyzing Output Presenting Storage Disseminating Transmission

8 Automated Information System
An automated information system is simply a system by which information is processed for collection and distribution through a series of automated processes. The system often requires very little human interaction other than setup and maintenance. The automated information system is often used to access information and send it out to individuals. Those using automated information systems include governments, libraries, and private businesses.

9 Major Components of an AIS
Hardware Software Networks and Communication People

10 Activities Input –data capture & data entry Output Processing Storing
What is involved in data capture? Output presenting & disseminating Processing Analyzing, sort, calculate, etc. Storing Retrieve Transmission (communication)

11 Assignment Identify types of manual and automated information systems.
