1 Chapter 10 Analysis

2 Plot & Events   Atticus, Scout says, is “much older than the parents of our school contemporaries” (older than other parents in Maycomb). Scout and Jem find their father’s age and somewhat different hobbies embarrassing and are reluctant to talk about him in public setting such as school. “He did not do things our schoolmate’s fathers did: he never went hunting, he did not play poker… He sat in the living-room and read” – Page 98 & 99 One day, however, a mad dog appears, wandering down the main street toward the Finches’ house. Calpurnia calls Atticus, who returns home with Heck Tate, the sheriff of Maycomb. Heck brings a rifle and asks Atticus to shoot the animal. To Jem and Scout’s amazement, Atticus does so, hitting the dog with his first shot despite his considerable distance from the dog. Later, Miss Maudie tells Jem and Scout that, as a young man, Atticus was the best shot in the county—“One-shot Finch.” Scout is eager to brag about this, but Jem tells her to keep it a secret, because he gathered that if Atticus wanted them to know, he would have told them. Atticus also seemed reluctant for his children to know shutting down the sheriff when he tried to tell the kids “Hush Heck.” – Page

3 Characters Atticus Calpurnia
Atticus arrives in the car with Tate Heck after a call from Calpurnia about a rabid dog, Atticus seems to be calm about the situation. Significant Quote: ‘I’d rather you shoot at tin cans in the backyard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the Blue jays that you want, if you can hit em’, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’ This quote is significant as it has influenced the title of the book and the themes of good and evil. Atticus is an older, stranger and less physically capable man compared to the other fathers. However, his skills and qualities include; doesn’t stress under pressure, shooting/ hunting, maturity and humility among some. Calpurnia Calpurnia is frantic on trying to keep everyone safe from the dog that is approaching down the street, even the Radley’s. This is shown in quotes like “Calpurnia stared, then grabbed us by the shoulders and ran us home.”, “Miss Eula May, can you please call Miss Rachel and Miss Stephanie Crawford and whoever’s got a phone on this street and tell em’ a mad dog is comin’…”

4 Characters Tate Heck Miss Maudie
Miss Maudie in this chapter seems to compliment Atticus’ talents and attributes when Jem and Scout seem to think that their Father has no unique abilities and is too old to do anything interesting or fun. This is shown in the quotes: “Well did you know he’s the best checker player in this town.”, “… it seems with all of that you’d be proud of him.”. Tate Heck Tate Heck in this chapter is nervous and shows a lot of trust in Atticus when the challenge of shooting the dog, Tim Johnson, next to the Radley Place confronts him. Which then forces him to hand the rifle to Atticus to continue it out. Heck, in this situation, seems very insistent that Atticus does it. This is shown in quotes such as: “Mr. Finch this is a one-shot job!”, “For God’s sake Mr. Finch, look where he is. Miss and you’ll go straight into the Radley House! I can’t shoot that well and you know it.”. This shows Tate Heck is very nervous when confronted.

5 Themes / Ideas Hunting – Atticus’s past experience and skill is shown when he shoots Tim Johnson. P Sin/ Good and Evil – Scout recalls that the only thing Atticus had ever said was a sin was “to kill a mockingbird” and she asks Miss Maudie about it. This is a sin because mockingbirds are seen as a symbol for purity and innocence, because "Mockingbirds don't do one thing but make music for us to enjoy.” p99-100 Honour and Humility – Scout wants to brag about Atticus’s heroics to the school, but Jem says not to: if Atticus was proud of it he would have told them. p109 Death - Tim Johnson dies in front of the Radley house, furthering the Radley house as a symbol of death. P Secrecy – Atticus doesn’t tell Scout or Jem that he used to go hunting, is very good at hunting or that his nicknames used to be “Ol’ One-Shot” and “One-Shot Finch.” p107 and 108

6 Setting The dog attack is based in the Finch’s street. This is significant because this is where Jem and Scout have lived and grown up. The sick dog represents something bad coming into their lives that will directly relate to them. The dog running towards the Radley House suggests the upcoming ‘issue’ will relate with the Radley’s. The dog was shot by Atticus in front of the Radley Place, this adds to the deathly and ‘haunted’ theme of the house.
