Birth of a Nation AP United States History Unit 2

2 Washington commemorates his service as a colonial militia colonel under British General Braddock in the French & Indian War (posing in 1772) Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army (posing in 1776)

3 Thomas Paine’s Common Sense

4 Common Sense (1776): On Monarchy
In England a king hath little more to do than to make war and give away places; which in plain terms, is to impoverish the nation and set it together by the ears. A pretty business indeed for a man to be allowed eight hundred thousand sterling a year for, and worshipped into the bargain! Of more worth is one honest man to society and in the sight of God, than all the crowned ruffians that ever lived.

5 Common Sense (1776): On British Control of America
Small islands not capable of protecting themselves are the proper objects for kingdoms to take under their care; but there is something very absurd in supposing a continent to be perpetually governed by an island.

6 Common Sense (1776): On Declaring Independence
Every thing that is right or natural pleads for separation. The blood of the slain, the weeping voice of nature cries, 'tis time to part.

27 Washington on Shays’ Rebellion
I am mortified beyond expression when I view the clouds that have spread over the brightest morn that ever dawned in any country... What a triumph for the advocates of despotism, to find that we are incapable of governing ourselves and that systems founded on the basis of equal liberty are merely ideal and fallacious.

28 Sam Adams on Shays’ Rebellion
Rebellion against a king may be pardoned, or lightly punished, but the man who dares to rebel against the laws of a republic ought to suffer death.

29 Jefferson* on Shays’ Rebellion
A little rebellion now and then is a good thing. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government. God forbid that we should ever be twenty years without such a rebellion. * in Paris, France
