1 The “Internet of things” (IoT)
Group Members: Adam Pellegrini & Jacques Farris,

2 What Is The Internet Of Things?
All electronic devices with an on/off switch are connected to the internet. All these devices will be able to communicate and work with each other.

3 Important questions we will answer
Is this even possible? Is this a new concept? What kind of data would be collected? How would this help me? How would this help the rest of the world? What are the dangers/risks? Is this a good idea?

4 Is this even possible? It is already partly in use today, but it will take time to fully implement. Newly created devices will need to be built with a way to communicate with others. Different types of devices will need to be able to understand each other. Security precautions will have to be implemented. More features means higher price tag. What about the billions of currently non-connected devices?

5 Is this a new concept? The phrase “Internet of things” was coined in 1999 by Kevin Ashton. People haven’t always used the internet as much as they do today. Older technology didn’t have ways to communicate with each other. Ex: the Razer vs the Razr Moore’s Law

6 What kind of data would be collected?
Telemetry data Sensor data Time-Series data

7 How would this help me? Scenario #1: Smart Home
Your house could assist in waking you up by slowly turning up the lights, playing soft music, or turning on your tv. While away from home, you could insure all electronic devices are turned off back at your house remotely, saving power. Ability to check security camera feed and allow remote access to house for family and friends.

8 How would this help me? (continued)
Scenario #2: Smart Car Dash cam footage of vehicle accident is automatically stamped with gps location and uploaded to your cloud storage for easy access. Upon serious collision, your vehicle could automatically send gps coordinates to emergency services, and notify family members. Check engine light activation triggers gps system to suggest nearest auto repair shop options.

9 How would this help the rest of the world?
IoT capable of creating smarter cities Smart cities reduce traffic pollution, create a cleaner environment, save energy and water Produces efficient operations within agriculture, manufacturing and other industries Improves healthcare and the quality of life

10 …continued (in manufacturing)

11 What are the dangers/risk?
Device security and integrity Afflict businesses and consumers Data breaches “The death of privacy?”

12 Is this a good idea? Negative and Positive Implications
Promotes a heightened sense about our world, and a way for us to be able to monitor the way we react to changing conditions that our new “awareness” may expose us to Provides a sense of comfort and efficiency Reduces the time we spend on completing long and boring tasks
