3 Approving the Constitution
Ratification- accepting or approving Nine states must approve the new constitution before it became legal. It was important for all states to accept it. New government Republic Separation of powers: three branches Checks and balances: each branch can check the other branches to make sure they are correct Federalism: two levels of gov’t share power. National and state.

Federalists Favored strong central government and supported the Constitution Loose interpretation- this would the give the federal government more leeway in making decisions Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, John Jay Anti-Federalists Favored stronger state governments Strict interpretation- the federal government could only do what the constitution said it could do. Thomas Jefferson Wanted the Bill of Rights
