Winter 2018 MA361 Differential Equations Syllabus

2 Instructor and Textbook
Instructor: Roxin Zhang Class: MWF 12:00 – 12:50 pm, Jamrich 3315 Office Hours: MWRT 11-11:50 am, Jamrich 2208 Text: A First Course in Differential Equations, 11th ed, by Denis Zill Prerequisite: MA265 and MA211

3 Office Hours and Software
Office Hours: MWRF 11:00 – 11:50 am Janrich 2208 Software Required: Maple (Install Maple at your earliest convenience)

4 Exercise and Homework Exercise problems will be assigned after each lecture. Students are expected to do the homework and participate in the discussions following the lectures.

5 Tests There are three types of tests:
Quizzes – quizzes will be given on a biweekly basis (drop one lowest).  Midterm – Tentatively scheduled in the 7th week.  Final exam – A comprehensive exam + an essay (project). Date and time check NMU Academic Calendar.

6 Final Project Close to the end of the semester, each student is required to write and present a formal essay on the applications of the ordinary differential equations to solving a real-world problem. History Modeling Mathematical structures Solution techniques Graphs and discussions Extensions Conclusions

7 Class Materials Lecture slides (including homework assignments) and Syllabus will be available through educat.nmu.edu. Slides normally will be uploaded near the end of a chapter.

8 Attendance and Grading
Attendance will be checked randomly and will be calculated into the grade. Remember that the poor attendance is one of the primary causes of failing a class. Grades are calculated as a weighted average of the quizzes, midterm, final exam and the attendance. The weights are:   Quizzes 50 % , Midterm 20 %, Final exam 25 %, Attendance 5 %  Grading Convention: A 95%, A- 90%, B+ 85%, B 80%, B- 75%, C+ 70%, C 65%, C- 60%, D+ 55% etc.

10 What is a differential equation?
- An equation involving functions and their derivatives. Example: The growth rate of a deer population is proportional to the population size at any time, namely, where P = population size, t = time, k = a constant. We would like to know how does the population change.

11 What is a differential equation?
Another example, the rate of change of the temperature of a cup of coffee is proportional to the difference of the temperature of the medium and the temperature of the coffee: where T = temperature of the coffee, Tm = temperature of the medium, t = time, k = a constant. We would like to know how is the temperature changing over time.

13 Learning Outcomes Upon completion of the class, students are expected to be able to use differential equations to model problems that are related to rates of changes; to understand the basic concepts and nature of the differential equations; to apply solutions techniques to solve the equations; to use the technology to graph, analyze and solving differential equation problems; To analyze the properties of the solutions; To interpret the mathematical results.
