1 Inside the Earth

2 Layers of the Earth fozzils1
Layers of the Earth - YouTube

3

4 Composition (What it is made of)
Crust Mantle Outer Core Inner core

5 The Crust Outer layer 5-100 km thick 2 types of crust
Oceanic (very dense, made of basalt) Continental (less dense, made of granite)

6 Oceanic and Continental Crust

7 Density of the different crusts, mantle
Density of the continental crust is less than oceanic crust and mantle.

8 Tectonic plates The crust of the Earth is broken into many pieces called plates that move.

9 Plates -- Lithosphere The crust and the upper layer of the mantle together make up a zone of rigid, brittle rock called the Lithosphere. The plates "float" on the soft, semi-rigid asthenosphere. The asthenosphere is in the middle part of the mantle.

10 The Mantle Middle layer Is where convection currents form

12 Mantle convection cell and continental drift video
mantle convection cells and continental drift.wmv - YouTube

13 Outer Core Liquid iron nickel

14 The Inner Core Made mostly of iron solid 1/3 of the earth’s mass
Very hot Very dense (extreme pressures)

15 How does density of each layer changes as you go towards the center of the Earth?

16 Which of the following graphs best represents the relationship between density and depth of material below Earth’s surface?

17 Earth’s Layers How are the earth’s layers similar to an egg?
Shell=crust Egg white=mantle Yolk= inner and outer core

18 Physical Structure of the Earth
A. Identify each of the three layers. B. Describe one characteristic of layer X. C. Describe one characteristic of layer Y. D. Describe one way layer Y interacts with layer Z.

19 What evidence do we have that the earth’s crust is split into tectonic plates that move?

20 Pangaea

21 Why do we believe that the earth formed one supercontinent Pangaea. 1
Why do we believe that the earth formed one supercontinent Pangaea? Fossil evidence 2. fit together like a puzzle 3. Same type of rocks

22 Earth’s history in the last 600 million years
