5 Safety Survey Results Most challenging questions Definition of Risk
NMSU 911 Safety Glasses requirements

6 Definition of Risk

7 If Overexposed to a Hazardous Substance
Get medical help immediately! Call 911 – Be sure to tell the dispatcher you are at NMSU Inform your lab supervisor Check SDS for first-aid instructions. Some general guidelines are Eyes: Flush with water for 15 minutes Ingestion: Follow label and SDS instructions Skin Contact: Stand under emergency shower and remove contaminated clothing immediately Inhalation: Get to fresh air and get prompt medical attention

Safety Glasses – flying particles, chemical splashes, dust Splash goggles – corrosive liquids, solvents, powders Face Shields – high pressure systems Let’s see what happens when Jorg doesn’t were proper eyewear v=CIvgdalqiBU

9 Jett Hall CHME Labs Safety Glasses Required at all times
Tape on floor inside the front door to lab Safety Glasses required beyond that point Change and store glasses Wash hands Safety supplies Lab coats

10 Bar Code Scanner

11 Fume Hood Airflow Testing

12 Fume Hood Airflow Testing
NMSU EHS Tests Fume Hoods Annually Lets discuss a Risk Analysis of a fume hood: What can go wrong? Dangerous materials or equipment Building exhaust Is that frequent enough? Facility changes Material changes What are the consequences? Hazardous materials remaining in fume hood Hazardous materials leaking out into room

13 Fume Hood Testing

14 What Not to Do

15 Basic Testing Procedure

16 Emergency Procedures

17 Lab Evacuation Close hoods
Turn off equipment and processes as specified in your ESP Both north and south exits can be used Take down the chain on the south exit Don’t dawdle

18 Lab and Building Evacuation
Close Doors Classrooms, offices etc. Stops fire spread Don’t use the elevator Proceed north and across the street on grass of Horseshoe. Check in with staff/admin. Stay away from the building until given all clear.

19 Active Shooter Safety Steps: Run Hide Fight
Active Shooter Training Video NMSU Police Website

20 Summary Wear your Safety Glasses
Remember other PPE also like proper closed toe shoes, long pants, gloves as specified etc. Know how to evacuate the lab and where to go Fume hood airflow and bar code scanner training are coming soon Remember Risk = Danger x Exposure
