Four general processes comprise “analytics” Asking meaningful questions Acquiring relevant data Analyzing the data quantitatively Presenting the results The bottom line is that—if done well—analytics can provide concrete insight into making better decisions. 3 What is football analytics?
Modern “analytics” is different from traditional statistical analysis in two ways: Large amounts of data (“big data”) are widely available; changed nature of hypothesizing Relatively advanced algorithms are relatively inexpensive to apply Three branches of sports analytics: things that are helpful to teams, things that are interesting to fans, things that are interesting to science.
