2 Emancipation Goal of the War for the North? Preserve the Union
Lincoln didn't end slavery but prevented it from spreading. Why??? The Boarder states When did this trend begin to shift and why? May 1861, Northerners knew that slaves working in the south gave the southerners more time to prepare and fight in the War.

3 The Emancipation Proclamation
Emancipate= To free an enslaved group of people Reasons- Opinion started to shift, Slavery helped the south continue to fight Striking a blow against slavery would cause France and Britain to not support the South. Thought it was his duty as president On Jan 1, 1863 Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation. “All persons held as slaves within any state..in rebellion against the US, shall be then, thenceforth, and forever be free.

4 Effects of Emancipation
100,000’s African Americans left slavery for the safety of Union Lines. British and France decided to withhold recognition of the Confederacy The thirteenth amendment was created which abolished slavery in the United States. African Americans were now used in the Union army

5 African Americans in the War
In the South 30% of the work force in the South was enslaved African Americans. So What do you think began to occur in the South? Did any African Americans fight on the side of the confederacy? Why? No, whites feared slave revolts

6 African Americans in the War
The North Did African Americans participate in the War from the start? Yes, While they were not permitted to join the Army they were welcomed into the Navy. Eventually there were admitted into the Army and by the end of the War made up nearly 10% of troops.
