1 How do we determine who is a citizen of the United States?

2 Naturalized is the legal process of becoming a citizen.
The Fourteenth Amendment All persons born or NATURALIZED in the United States and subject to the JURISDICTION thereof are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside… Naturalized is the legal process of becoming a citizen. Jurisdiction means legal authority.

3 What type of citizen do you need to be to become president?
“No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States…shall be eligible to the Office of President.” Article II, Section 1 – United States Constitution So what is a “natural born citizen”?

4 Natural Born Citizenship is based on two “laws”:
Place of birth, or “Law of the Soil” Children born in the United States or Territories/Possessions Parents, or “Law of the Blood” Children born to a parent or parents who are United States citizens.

5 To Sum It Up… Law of the Soil – WHERE you are born (must be within the United States or territory/possession) Law of the Blood – WHO you are born to

6 So who is a NATURALIZED citizen?

7 Naturalized Citizens Naturalized citizens are non-citizens who go through legal means of becoming a citizen. If you want to become naturalized, you have to go through the following steps….

8 To Become a Naturalized Citizen…
Apply to become a permanent resident (resident alien). Be a permanent resident of the United States for 5 years. Apply to become naturalized. Successfully complete a civics exam Demonstrate the ability to read, write, and speak English Be of good moral character Pay a fee Take an Oath of Allegiance to the United States.

9 Can you lose your citizenship?
Yes………. You can lose your United States citizenship if you do any of the following: Becoming naturalized in another country Swearing an oath of allegiance to another country Serving in the military of a nation at war with the U.S. By being convicted of committing treason

10 Article II, Section 1 of the U.S.
Naturalized Citizens Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Once you are naturalized, you have all the rights established in the U.S. Constitution. Naturalized citizens can run become Representatives in the House of Representatives and/or the Senators in the Senate… …but they CANNOT run for President. (you MUST be a Natural Born Citizen!)
