Circuits

Drawing a Circuit Draw a circuit that contains one battery and one working light bulb

Schematic Diagram

Single Cell Battery Battery or EMF
The longer side is the positive terminal The shorter side is the negative terminal Every Circuit must have at least one of these! Battery or EMF

Resistor 40 Ω The resistance is usually written above the resistor

Light Bulb Since a light bulb is also a type of resistor, it can also be drawn using the resistor symbol

Capacitor Looks like the parallel plate capacitor we saw in the capacitance notes!

Connecting Wire A straight line is drawn to represent the wire connecting any two components in a circuit

Switches Open: Current Cannot flow Closed: Current can flow

Meters V A Voltmeter: Ammeter:
Must be connected OUTSIDE of the circuit Usually on either side of a resistor V Ammeter: Must be connected WITHIN the circuit A

Try One! A circuit that contains one battery one switch and two resistors, with an ammeter measuring the current through the entire circuit With a voltmeter measuring the voltage across one of the resistors
