2 Objectives:  Explain relationships among religious ideas, philosophical ideas and culture. Explain significance of religious holidays and observances.

3 I) What is Religion?  Religion is the belief or pursuit in and worship of a superhuman controlling power through faith. Religion is a central part of many cultures. It affects social life and customs as well as the arts and literature. Religion also shapes the way societies and individuals see the world.

4 II) Relationships among Religious ideas, Philosophical Ideas, and Cultures
New religious and philosophical ideas emerged as humans explored the nature of human existence and the nature of human relationships. Cultures are distinguished by the religious ideas and/or philosophical ideas which have been adopted and passed on through generations. Belief systems are considered an element of culture which influence cultural institutions and practices. Religious and philosophical ideas can influence the cultural landscape and institutions of a region such as with differences of architecture, organization of governments, and traditions among social groups.

Such as: Buddhism, Catholic Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Sikhism.

7 Activities: Major world Religions Scavenger Hunt: (Group work)
Using the internet find the Major leader and belief for each religion. Paste the correct information on your scavenger hunt “Major Religions Scavenger Hunt” Sheet. Draw a symbol that symbolizes that religion. Religious holidays and Observances Scavenger Hunt: (Partner Work) Using the internet find the meaning behind each holiday. Paste the correct information on your scavenger hunt “Religious Holidays and Observances Scavenger Hunt” Sheet. Draw a symbol that symbolizes that holiday and observance.
