Symptoms and characteristics Hirschsprung disease is an intestinal disorder characterized by the absence of nerves in parts of the intestine. Who is affected? Anyone, but the following have a higher risk: It is more common in boys than girls It occurs in one out of 5,000 births. Approximately 3 to 5 percent of male siblings and 1 percent of female siblings of children with short-segment disease also have the disease.
