2 Fill in the blanks on your poetry notes.
Directions Fill in the blanks on your poetry notes. Choose one line from the example slide, and write it down in the correct box. Do the back following the directions of the last slide.

5 metaphor A metaphor is a figure of speech in which something is described as though it were something else. A metaphor points out a similarity between two unlike things.

simile A figure of speech that uses like or as to compare two unlike ideas.

8 Simile example She hung her head like a dying flower.
I’m about as awesome as a flying giraffe. My heart is like an open highway. You’re as cold as ice.

9 personification A type of figurative language in which a nonhuman subject is given human characteristics.

Lightning danced across the sky. Traffic slowed to a crawl. The stairs groaned as we walked on them. She is so beautiful the camera loves her.

12 Onomatopoeia example The snow softly falling as it “hushes” and “shushes” the cars that drive in the street. “Bang, bang he shot me down.” “Cause I am a champion, and you’re gonna hear me roar.”

15 Figurative language practice
On the back side of your notes, choose one object to describe. This object can be anything BUT a person or animal. Examples: Love/Lightning/Rainbows/Weather/etc. This object goes in the center. Be creative! Make stuff up! Example: Object is a cloud. In the onomatopoeia category, I could put “The cloud whooshed across the sky.” Use complete sentences
