4. Discussion
Small Groups: In groups of 3 or 4, each student shares quote and why he/she chose it.
Whole Class: Poll class to see who chose which quote. Have one student share for each one.

How can chemistry knowledge, principles and skills be used to create a work of art?
What are the relationships between chemistry and art?

6. What is Art?
How many types of art can you list? (Record them in your notes)
Watch the slide show of art images. When done, add to your list if necessary.
In your opinion, what makes something art?
How might chemistry be used in art?
If possible add music to art slide show. It can either be linked or played separately. When art slide show is over, call on each student to give a type of art (with no repeats).

7. Discussion
Artists use chemistry principles and understandings to create, improve, or protect their art.
At the end of this unit, you will create an original work of art and explain the chemistry involved.

9. Artist as Chemist - Unit Project
Question: What is a chemical process? (Think for 30 seconds. Record your thoughts in your notes, if necessary.)
Pair Share: Turn to your neighbor and share your ideas on what a chemical process is.
A chemical process involves changing material in some fashion. It may or may not include a chemical reaction. Sometimes it is just rearranging, mixing, or separating, and sometimes a new substance is created.

What is the difference between a chemical formula and a chemical equation?

Chemical Formula: C6H12O6
Chemical Equation: CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6 + O2
A chemical formula involves a single substance, but with the correct ratio of atoms of each element.
A chemical equation includes chemical formulas for more than one substance and has both reactants and products.
