2.2 Microsoft Word Creating Documents CREATING DOCUMENTS Follow up with students on the previous homework assignments. Before coming to class, students should have watched the final video in Section 2.1 and the two videos for this section (2.1.3, 2.2.1, and 2.2.2).

2 Section Skill Overview

KEY Terms Clipboard Copy Cursor Cut Paste Undo KEY TERMS Introduce key terms for this section. Ask students if they have questions about particular terms. If students have not watched the videos in this section, you may choose to play one or more videos to introduce features. Videos include: Introduction to Word (2:14) – from Section 2.1 Text Selection (3:12) The Clipboard (4:17)

KEY DEFINITIONS Clipboard: A location where cut or copied material is temporarily stored. This material can be transferred to other documents or files by using the paste command. Copy: A command that duplicates selected data (e.g., text, graphics, folders, documents) and stores it in the clipboard. This data can then be placed in another location or document. Cursor: An indicator that identifies where the next character that is typed will be displayed (insertion point) and the current screen location of the mouse pointer. KEY DEFINITIONS As needed, define key terms that students do not understand.

5 KEY DEFINITIONS (continued)
Microsoft Word - Formatting Pages KEY DEFINITIONS (continued) Cut: A command that removes selected data (e.g., text, graphics, folders, documents) and stores it in the clipboard. This data can then be placed in another location or document. Paste: A command that moves copied material from the clipboard to a user-determined location in a document. Copied content can be pasted with or without text formatting. Undo: A command that removes the last update or change made to a document, spreadsheet, presentation, or database. KEY DEFINITIONS CONTINUED As needed, provide more definitions for key terms.

In-class Practice Do Challenge Lab and aim for the best possible time. The lab can be attempted multiple times, with the task set changing each time. Let me know if you need help on a task. OPTIONAL SLIDE: PRACTICE Use this slide if you want students to spend time during class completing the labs. Possible ways of using the labs include: Complete the Skills lab in class as a group (everyone working together on the same task at the same time). Tasks are presented in the same order for everyone, allowing students to follow along with the teacher. Following the teacher demonstration, students can restart the lab to complete any tasks not passed off. Give students time to work on the Challenge lab during class. Provide enough time for students to improve their times by working through the lab multiple times. If desired, give students a target time to beat, or recognize the fastest times at the end of the practice session. Time permitting, students can work through the Applied lab(s) instead of doing them as homework.

Class Discussion What are some situations when you might want to paste text from the Clipboard using the Keep Text Only option? Does the Ctrl + V keyboard shortcut keep or remove formatting of inserted text? How can using Undo help you to learn how to use unfamiliar Word features? CLASS DISCUSSION Possible answers to the discussion questions include the following: Keep Text Only: When copying formatted text from a web page When copying text from one document to another Default Paste Option for Keyboard Shortcut: The keyboard shortcut for paste (Ctrl + V) keeps the text formatting. This is the default paste option. Undo: Knowing that most commands can be reversed with one click of the mouse should help users feel more comfortable making mistakes and experimenting with unfamiliar features.

Class Activities Open a document in Microsoft Word and experiment with the Clipboard Pane: From the Home tab, in the Clipboard group, click the small button in the lower right corner Copy or cut items from the document Select particular items from the Clipboard and paste them at the current insertion point Practice using different text selection methods, in addition to clicking and dragging over text: Double-click a word or triple-click a paragraph Click or double-click in the left margin Press the Shift key and then click to select a portion of text Select a word, press the Ctrl key, and then select another word Press Ctrl + A to select the entire document CLASS ACTIVITIES Time permitting, ask students to participate in one or more of these classroom activities. Because the Clipboard Pane is not simulated in the labs, this activity will give students a better understanding of how the Clipboard works. Note that by default, copied or cut items are not “collected” in the Clipboard for later retrieval. Only the most recent item is available to be pasted. However, with the Clipboard Pane open, up to 24 items can be collected. Individual items are then available to be selected and pasted into the document. Note that most text selection methods are supported by the simulated labs. One exception is the Select + Ctrl + Select method.

Summary Enabling downloaded files for editing Clipboard paste options Text selection methods Reversing Word commands with Undo OPTIONAL SLIDE: SUMMARY Use this slide to highlight some of the more important points covered during class. Files downloaded from the Internet are “protected” by Office applications until they are enabled for editing. Text that is copied and then pasted from the Clipboard includes text formatting by default. Portions of text can be selected in several different ways, including clicking and dragging, double- and triple-clicking, clicking in the left margin, and using the mouse along with the Shift and Ctrl keys. Most Word commands can be reversed immediately by clicking Undo.
