2 Problems with California
By 1850, California had enough people to become a new state. If California was admitted as a free state, it would upset the balance of free and slave states. So there had to be a compromise..

3 Compromise of 1850 To please the North, California would be admitted as a free state, To please the South, Congress would not pass laws regarding slavery for the rest of the territories won from Mexico. And a stronger law to help slaveholders recapture runaway slaves. (Fugitive Slave Act).

5 What were the main ideas expressed by the abolitionists?
Abolitionists believed that slavery was wrong. Most abolitionists demanded immediate freeing of slaves. Abolition leaders included both men and women. The Quakers were one of the first religious groups to oppose slavery.

6 Harriet Beecher Stowe Harriet Beecher Stowe was outraged when she heard about the FUGITIVE SLAVE ACT part of The Compromise of As a result, in 1852 Stowe wrote Uncle Tom’s Cabin; a novel which portrayed slavery as brutal and immoral. This book encouraged many people in the North to become abolitionists.

16 “BLEEDING KANSAS” John Brown, a fervent abolitionist, believed that God had chosen him to end slavery. Brown had recently come to Kansas from Ohio with his 6 sons and a son in law. One night Brown led four of his sons and two other men along Pottawatomie Creek, where they seized and killed five proslavery men.

18 John Brown’s Raid On Harpers Ferry
He wanted to help the slaves to freedom, so he planned a raid. He needed guns and ammunition, so he and his followers raided a federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry in Virginia. Within 24 hours troops led by Colonel Robert E. Lee captured Brown.

19 He was taken to court and charged with treason and was sentenced to be hanged.
He said that he was happy to die for God’s eternal truth. Southerners saw him as a murderer and were afraid that others would follow his example. Northerners didn’t like the killings but thought he was a hero.
