3 Objective To observe the effect of temperature on the solubility of potassium nitrate (KNO3) and sodium chloride (NaCl).

4 Procedure 1) Obtain two test tubes, label them 1 and 2, and add mL of water to each 2) Add 5.0 g of NaCl to the first test tube and 5.0 g of potassium nitrate to the second 3) Stir the solutions for several minutes and compare the amount of solid that dissolved 4) Obtain a 250 mL beaker and add water until about ¾ full 5) Place the two test tubes in the water bath and place it on the hot plate

5 Procedure, con. 6) Heat the water bath while stirring both solutions
7) Take note of any change in solubility as the solutions are heated 8) Once the water is almost boiling in the beaker, remove the test tubes and compare the amount of solid that dissolved 9) Cool each test tube down by running it under cold water and take note of any change in solubility

6 Sodium Chloride (NaCl) Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)
Data At Room Temperature (about 20oC): While Heating: At about 100oC: While Cooling: Sodium Chloride (NaCl) Potassium Nitrate (KNO3)

7 Conclusion NaCl and KNO3 have different solubilities. In cold water, the solubilities of the two substances are (the same/very different). In hot water, the solubility of (NaCl/KNO3) is much higher. The solubility of NaCl at room temperature is __________ and at boiling is __________. The solubility of KNO3 at room temperature is __________ and at boiling is __________.
