1 Peer Assessment Guidelines
Use the rubric to justify the scoring of your paper and the papers of those in your group Provide HONEST and CONSTRUCTIVE feedback. When you note something that is bad about a paper, offer a suggestion about how the writer can improve. This is not the opportunity to be harsh to those you don’t like and to be too easy on your friends. It is very important that you are honest, yet kind and supportive, to those in your group.

2 Peer Assessment Instructions Self Assessment
Tear or cut a sheet of notebook paper into quarters. Each small sheet of paper will be used to record the scoring for each essay you will grade. Begin with the self assessment. On the top of the quarter-sheet of paper write your name and SELF ASSESSMENT. Record the score (1-9) that you give yourself for the essay. Write a 1-2 sentence justification for that score using the language of the rubric. Provide examples of two things you did well. Provide examples of two things you did badly. For the negative ones, write how you could improve on future papers.

3 Peer Assessment Instructions Peer Assessment
You will be reading and assessing the papers of each member in your group. On the top of the remaining quarter-sheets of paper write the author’s name, your name, and PEER ASSESSMENT. Record the score (1-9) that you the essay. Write a 1-2 sentence justification for that score using the language of the rubric. Provide examples of two things the author did well. Provide examples of two things the author did badly. For the negative ones, write how he or she could improve on future papers.

4 Peer Assessment—Turning In
Staple all of the quarter-sheets of paper to the top left corner of the essay, with the self assessment on top. IF YOU ARE WAY OFF ON YOUR SCORING (MORE THAN 2 POINTS), YOU WILL RECEIVE A LOWER GRADE FOR THE ACTIVITY. BE ACCURATE.

5 Peer Assessment Reminders
Be kind. Don’t treat others in way that you wouldn’t want to be treated. Being kind does not mean telling someone that their paper was good when it wasn’t. By doing so, you will set your classmates up for failure. Be specific with your examples and your feedback. Note ways that the writer could have improved.
