1 Lecture 8: IS Strategy and the Internet
This Lecture Examines The Internet as a social system. How to ‘scope’ web management through a boundary judgement approach. An Intervention strategy for WWW implementation. Bringing it all together in the form of a methodology. Friday, November 16, 2018 Steve Clarke

2 Lecture 8: The Internet as a Social System
From a radical humanist, or critical perspective, the early, technological, view of IS as functionalist, ‘hard’, problem solving, is seen to be an impoverished one, over-focused on the use of computer technology. ‘Soft’ or human-centred methodologies have been pursued as a solution to this problem, and have been to some extent successful. But recent thinking questions the ability of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ approaches to achieve the agenda they apparently set out for themselves, and points to a need to combine approaches under the umbrella of critical social theory. 3 Lecture 8: Boundaries Friday, November 16, 2018 Steve Clarke

4 Lecture 8: An Intervention Strategy
An arbitrary system definition is presented A brainstorming session (de Bono 1977) is set up, attended by representatives of all the key participant areas The system is critiqued using CSH Mixing Methods to Address the Issues Friday, November 16, 2018 Steve Clarke

5 Lecture 8: IS Strategy and the Internet: Summary
The Internet should be seen as a social system enabled by technology Internet Strategy requires participation by all those involved in and affected by the system Determining and revisiting boundaries is the first key to success Mixed methods should be applied, critically informed, to address the mix of human, technical and organisational issues Friday, November 16, 2018 Steve Clarke

6 Lecture 9: Strategy and Information Security
This Lecture Examines Information Security as a domain. The difference between operational and strategic issues. An evaluative model as the basis for strategic development. Implementation guidelines derived by adopting a strategically informed perspective to information security. Friday, November 16, 2018 Steve Clarke

14 Lecture 9: Strategy and Information Security: Summary
Information Security is a domain dominated by pragmatic, technology-based methods. By acceding to these methods, both the British Standard and industrial practice has favoured a short-term, operationalist approach. Human factors are seen as largely external to the Information Security ‘system’. This chapter reports a research study from which has been derived an evaluative model and implementation approach which takes account of human factors by drawing specifically on social theory. The outcome is a more strategically-focused Information Security, with methods which enable the current status to be determined and improved upon. Friday, November 16, 2018 Steve Clarke
