5 What is 5G?

6 IMT-2020 Vision, Requirements
5G supports different ‘vertical industies’. It is not a ‘one size fits all’ set of technologies.

7 5G Support in 3GPP 3GPP split the 5G project into two phases.
Phase 1: Base system, enhanced mobile broadband, some URLLC features Phase 2: Enhanced system, additional radio capabilities, URLLC features, mIoT features 5G adds new radio, network and service capabilities, but retains EPC and E-UTRAN. Different operators will deploy 5G in different ways.

8 Some Principal Innovations of 5G
Core Network (5GC) Slicing support, Service Based Architecture, Common Core Network, Packet Based QoS (instead of bearer aggregated QoS handling), Efficient handling of user plane and control Radio Network (NR) PHY: Forward compatibility, Support for high bandwidths, Flexible Mini-Slot (non-slot based) Allocation, RRM: New Synchronization, Beam Support,

9 5G Status in RAN, SA and CT

10 5G from a 3GPP perspective

11 5G Phase 1 & 2 - SA and CT Perspective
Rel-15 is 5G phase 1. SA3, SA4 and SA5 complete stage 2 and 3. CT groups are hard at work. Rel-16 is 5G phase 2. SA1 (completes), SA2 and SA6 continue their studies. CT will start their studies earliest IMT 2020 submission is Dec

12 Release 16 - RAN Pespective

13 5G phase-1 in Rel-15 Summary - Licensed bands between 600MHz – 39 GHz
- LTE-Anchored 5G (NSA), and Standalone (SA) 5G - Basic URLLC support - Massive MIMO - Flexible RAN architecture - Fulfills IMT2020 criteria

14 3GPP 5G Phase 1 Support (Rel-15)

15 … towards the full 5G vision:
5G phase-2 in Rel-16 … towards the full 5G vision: - V2X support – autonomous driving - Enhanced MIMO - Support for Unlicensed bands - Factory automation - Support of higher bands (>52.6 GHz) - …

16 Status of Rel-16 Activity in SA

17 Status of Rel-16 Work on 5G in SA
NOT INCLUDED - Media related - OAM related - Security related - Adaptation of existing servcies (e.g. IMS)

18 Verticals and 3GPP (1/2)

19 Verticals and 3GPP (2/2) 5G seeks to increase the applicability of mobile telecommunications to many more business domains. Slicing provides services specific to customer needs – possibly with quite different requirements (scalability, energy savings, reliability, delay, mobility management, high accuracy positioning…) Support for diverse scenarios (extreme long range, high speed, ubiquitous access, low latency, high density…) 5G improves operations – efficiency, flexibility, exposure RAN CU-DU split, network architecture improvements for virtualization and flexible deployments,

20 URLLC in Release 16 (1/2) SA1 (Service Requirements)
Study on Communication for Automation in Vertical Domains – for industrial automation in diverse scenarios. QoS Monitoring: Assurance, Monitoring & Reporting. LAN Support in 5G: secure & high performance (to replace a wired system.) SA2 (Architecture) [FS_EPC_URACE] Enhance EPC to support reliability (e.g %), recovery, reduced jitter: may result in user plane (network and transport), mobility & session management enhancements.

21 URLLC in Release 16 (1/2) SA2 (Architecture) RAN
[FS_5G_URLLC] Enhance 5GC to support between UE and DN: low latency (e.g. <5ms), reliability (e.g %), low jitter (e.g <100μs) as enhancements Architecture studies corresponding to Automation, QoS Monitoring & 5G LAN have not begun. RAN NR URLLC enhancements are under discussion to be prioritized at TSG #80 (June, 2018) LTE URLLC enhancements are part of Rel-15, and this effort may continue in Rel-16.

22 mIoT SA1 (Service Requirements) SA2 (Architecture) RAN
Service Requirements for the 5G System: includes mIoT requirements. [100% complete, TS ] SA2 (Architecture) FS_CIoT_5G: Study on Cellular IoT support and evolution for the 5G System RAN IoT/eMTC evolution (LTE & NR) study proposal – interim conclusions: LWPA in Rel-16 will only be LTE-M (eMTC) and NB-IoT based; no NR based solution will be studied or specified for LWPA use cases. Enhanced coexistence between NR and LTE-M (eMTC/NB-IoT) will proceed as long as it is useful and does not impact legacy UEs. RAN aspects needed for adding connection of LTE-M (eMTC) / NB-IoT to 5GC will be discussed based on SA2 study outcome This is not a complete list
