How our Bodies work

Heart Rate Your heart works like a pump, it has a contracting action followed by a relaxing action Each time your heart beats, it pumps blood into the arteries causing a pulse Your pulse indicates how fast or slow your heart is beating

Activity Test your heart rate

Organ Systems work together The bodys organ systems work together to carry out all the functions that are vital for survival

Example: Hand Look at your hand- it is an example of all of the systems Skeletal- bones Circulatory- blood vessels Nervous- nerves carrying signals to the brain Respiratory- oxygen delivered via blood Digestive- nutrients delivered via blood Excretory- wastes removes from tissues

System Interdependence The circulatory system has the job to transport substances throughout the body; It gets these substances from other organ systems (ie nutrients, oxygen) But the circulatory system also relies on nervous system, muscles etc to be able to function The body could not function without all of its body systems

Fun Fact If you lined up all of your blood vessels from end to end, they would form a tube over 100 000 km long!! Mental ability is increased and improved with physical activity (the mind and body are dependent on each other)

Healthy Bodies Factors that can affect your health: Inherited diseases or conditions Bacteria or viruses Environmental conditions such as smog, and allergens How you treat your body (diet, smoking etc) How you respond to stress

Prevention and treatment when illness occurs Traditional (aboriginal medicine)- Aboriginal peoples believe all plants and animals have a purpose and are sacred Also put a lot of value in the power of a persons spirit and prayer was always used to enhance medicine Used many sacred plants to treat common aliments

Naturopaths continue to use traditional medicine today Strive to find the cause of the illness and heal that instead of treating symptoms Works over the long term to help the body heal itself

Vaccines Have helped eradicate certain deadly diseases Recently have been questioned for safety and a link to autism This has now been scientifically disproved

Types of vaccines Smallpox- has killed 300-500 million people and as many as 2 million in 1967 alone Polio- causes paralysis and possible death, Canada was declared polio free in 1994 Measles- affects18 million people a year (200, 000 die) still contract the disease but worldwide deaths have been decreased by 74%

Diseases that were almost non-existent are making a come back due to the anti- vaccination movement http://nutritionfacts.org/video/aluminum- in-vaccines-vs-food/
