Destruction- countries industry was destroyed left in ruins- had to rebuild except the US
GI Bill- unemployment payments, mortgages at low rates, low interest loans to start businesses, and money for education
Between million babies were born each year for a period of more than a decade

Nuremburg- allied powers put nazi leaders on trial for crimes against humanity. Even when you are told by your government to do something you are still responsible for your actions. Most were convicted and sentenced to hang
Occupation- Germany was occupied by the US, GB, France and SU. Each allied power established its own occupation zone. The Capital Berlin was also divided into separate sectors. – decided at the Potsdam Conference- Churchill, Stalin and Truman. Break up Germany and Austria into 4 zones, give back all annexed land, SU wanted war reparations, and got them out of their zone but not the others, The SU will be in charge of setting up a democratic government I Poland (doesn’t work out so well)
Japan also was occupied by the US, Japanese leaders put on trial, macArthur put in charge of rebuilding country, Japan was forbidden to have an army or navy, a new constitution was created, and Japan will become a major capilalist producing ally for the US in years to come.
UN- needed a replacement for the league of nations, US Senate passed it in FDR had worked with both republicans at home and stalin abroud to make sure every one was happy and we would not have a repeat of the League of nations. In the autumn of 1944 a conference was held outside of Washington dc in Dumbarton Oaks where they agreed on the general structure of the UN, including the security council of 5 permanent members (USA, Russia, China Britain, and France) had veto power. The United Nations Charter is officially signed at the San Francisco Conference April to June 1945 in which 50 memebers participated including The US. Mary Mcleod Bethune (Floridian) who was assigned by Truman to be a part of the delegation to the San Francisco Conference. Jan nations signed the United Nations declaration
created to maintain peace and encourage friendship and cooperation among nations, as well as seeks to eliminate hunger and disease does rely on collective security like leagu of nations, but has its own peace keeping forces
Defined the rights to which all human beings are entitled right to life the prohibition of slavery and torture, freedom of religions, freedom of movement, established social and economic and cultural rights. (greatly influenced by Eleanor Roosevelt)

By 1945 the federal gov had spent more than 98 billion dollars in the Fl economy to further the war effort. Ship yards, they bought out hotels for troops quarters, increased its production of citrus fruits (began using DDT)
A lot of the men stationed here during the war will like it so much they come back to visit or move here. There will be an increase of construction and agriculture in fl creating a booming job market.
