5 Ambrose Bierce 1842 – 1914 ? Bierce was known as “Bitter Bierce” as a child – he was apparently pessimistic and negative as a youngster. He joined the Union Army as a young man and witnessed a great deal of the horror of war.

6 He moved West after the war, writing for magazines
After moving West, he met other American writers, such as Bret Hart and Mark Twain A few years abroad gave him a style that was satirical and sophisticated, solidifying his reputation as a writer

7 He loved unusual and strange occurrences, and his death was a mystery, too
He traveled to Mexico and was believed to be killed during the Mexican Revolution He is known to have been among some of the fighting, but disappeared and was never heard from again

8 Naturalism Bierce is one of the finest authors in the genre of American Naturalism Remember: Naturalism believes that human beings are “shaped by heredity and environment that they cannot control.”

9 Chickamauga, page 162 The story takes place during a major battle in the Civil War The main character, however, is not a soldier or even the war; it is a small child Animal imagery is used in the story; Naturalism questions whether human beings are as superior to the animal world as we believe…

Does the emotion of the story enhance your understanding of the War, or do you feel that it is “overdone”? Your response should be as a complete essay, not simply a list of answers to the prompt
