Renewable and Nonrenewable Natural Resources
2
Renewable NonRenewable Endless supply
Wind, sun (solar), hydropower, geothermal power Metals and minerals (can be recycled and reused) Water (have to use it carefully in a desert climate) Food and trees (replanted, reproduced) Will eventually run out Petroleum products: oil, gas, coal Cannot be replenished easily or quickly Entire forest can’t be replaced quickly Nuclear Power: uses uranium, which will run out, produces toxic waste
3
Renewable: Endless supply
4
NonRenewable: Runs out
5
We are using up petroleum fast!
Petroleum will be used up in a few decades and coal in less than 300 years.
6
Why are Natural Resources Important?
Power! How will we charge our phones? We depend on power for transportation, hospitals, heating, cooling, light, entertainment, preserving food, etc The population of our world is exploding exponentially. We are consuming nonrenewable resources too quickly to keep up for long.
