1 Chapter 1 Section 2: The nature of science
Ms Su’ad

2 What is science? Science – a body of knowledge based on the study of the natural world. Science is based on scientific inquiry, which is a creative process based on observations and experiments to develop explanations. Scientific theory – an explanation of a natural phenomenon supported by many observations and experiments over time. Scientific law – used to describe relationships under certain conditions of nature.

3 Expands science The driving force that moves science forward is the search for new knowledge. Pseudoscience – an area of study that tries to imitate science. Ex. Astrology, horoscopes, psychic reading, tarot card reading, face reading, and palmistry. Little research is done in pseudoscience. Ideas don’t ask questions and new knowledge and research is not welcomed.

4 Science in everyday life
In order to understand and process these large amounts of scientific information, a person must be scientifically literate. That means, you combine your basic knowledge of science with reasoning and thinking skills. Ethics – a set of moral principles or values. Most scientific research involves ethical issues that must be addressed by society depending on what they think is important.
