5 What is Impressionism? art movement that developed mainly in France during the 1870’s and 1880’s got its name from an art critic who used the term in a satirical way “Impression—I was certain of it. I was just telling myself that, since I was impressed, there had to be some impression in it ... and what freedom, what ease of workmanship! Wallpaper in its embryonic state is more finished than that seascape.” Louis Leroy, art critic

6 What is Impressionism? Subject matter:
Featured middle-class people (friends, family members) Cityscapes (Paris), seascapes, countryside Ordinary activities (bathing, relaxing, leisure activities, etc.) Color Canvas background light rather than dark/reddish brown Used manufactured colors that beforehand were difficult to mix and applied them directly to the canvas Mixed paints with whitish hue to produce luminescent color Technique En plein air (open air): went outside to paint at different times of the day under different skies Applied colors side-by-side without mixing/blending for optical effects Visible quick brushstrokes
