Based on your prior reading on cults, you will be evaluating two different organizations that are based in spiritual/sacred practice: Scientology, and another of your own choosing (that falls outside of the major religions – Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Hinduism, Buddhism, Taoism). For each, you should address the following:
A brief history of the organization. This should include their founder and appx. date of creation.
Foundational tenets/beliefs/documents. This should include mention of any creation stories or essential narratives to the organization.
Current membership; numbers and/or requirements.
Your evaluation: Is this a church? Denomination? Sect? Cult? Defend your choice.
How would a functionalist understand and discuss this organization?
How would a conflict theorist understand and discuss this organization?
