3 Plants have to adapt to their environments to survive and make new plants.
For example, they must find a way to get enough water and sunlight to make their own food. Let’s look at how desert plants and rainforest plants had to adapt to get the water and sunlight they need.

4 There is not much water in the desert
There is not much water in the desert. Most deserts get less than 10 inches of rain per year. But each plant must get some water. Plants in the desert grow apart from each other so they don’t have to share the small amount of water when it rains. This haworthia plant has adapted to protect itself by growing mostly underground where it is cooler.

5 Rainforests, however, get about 80 inches of rain a year
Rainforests, however, get about 80 inches of rain a year! Some plants have adapted the shapes of their leaves so water rolls off easily. Their leaves have points called drip tips that make the water run to the tips of the leaves. Then the water drops to the ground. If the plant received too much water, it would die.

6 Lianas are the climbers that have their roots on the forest floors and reach the tree canopy for the sunlight and sometimes they start growing in the canopy and send their roots to the ground.
