2 The Greek Polis (city-state)
Urban center and surrounding rural farmlands. The two dominant city-states of Ancient Greece were Athens and Sparta.

3 Each City state had an Agora – a market place used for debates, public meetings, and festivals.

4 Some city states, such as Athens, had an Acropolis, a Citadel (Fortress) located “High up on a hill”“

6 Athens Athens developed the world’s first democratic form of government. As it’s population increased, new colonies were established throughout the Mediterranean. It’s overseas empire of colonies brought great riches to the city.

7 Athens became a center of Greek culture.
Large public art projects such as statues and temples were created.

8 Life in Athens Only free, adult, males were considered citizens. Women, slaves and foreigners were given few rights.

9 Athenian Boys Only the sons of wealthy citizens were given an education. Schooling focused on preparing a boy to become a good citizen. Subjects studied included, history, grammar, poetry, and music, math, and athletics. Boys also learned public speaking and debate in order to participate in civic life.

10 Athenian Girls Girls did not receive a formal education.
They learned the skills of cooking, sewing, and taking care of the home in order to become good wives. Some did learn to read and write.

12 The Athenian Navy Led the defense of the Greek city-states against the Persian invasion. Superior navy defeated the Persians at the battle of Salamis. Established control over colonies in the Mediterranean. Athens became rich from the control over commercial activity in the region. Profits were used to fund public projects in Athens that glorified the city-state.
